I. set up the ABB ACS880 Variable Frequency Drive

In this article i might wish to show you ways to set up the ABB ACS880 Variable Frequency Drive.
Before we glance into the set up the ABB ACS880 Variable Frequency Drive, let us take a look at ABB variable frequency drive.

ABB variable frequency drive

This family of ABB  ACS880 drives is will simplify your world and open all possibilities you have complete flexibility and capability in wall mounted or cabinet built drives.

They can be customized to the precise needs of industries to control a wide rage of application at the heart of the drive is the direct torque control a premier motor control technology built in safety features reduces the need for external safety components  multiple drives.

1. Procedure to set up the ABB ACS880 Variable Frequency Drive

This article show you how to set up the ABB ACS880 Drive, in this demonstration i will be using the keypad for the setup, and will set the drive to a local operation by pressing the local remote key i will then press the soft key for the menu.

The ABB ACS880 series Speed Drive has several different sorts of Auto-Tuning functions.

99 Motor data
  • 99.03 Motor type Asynchronous
  • 99.04 Motor control mode
  • 99.06 Motor nominal current
  • 99.07 Motor nominal voltage
  • 99.08 Motor nominal frequency
  • 99.09 Motor nominal speed
  • 99.10 Motor nominal power
  • 99.11 Motor nominal Cos Phi
  • 99.12 Motor nominal torque
  • 99.13 ID Run requested

Step 1:

First step of set up the ABB ACS880 drive is to select the parameter menu option with the same soft key here i can choose the complete list the first parameters i will need to change are in the group 99 motor data.

For this group i will need the motor data from my namplate the first setting 99.03 is set to asynchronous motor this is intended for standard squirrel-cage AC induction motors i will keep this at the default.

Step 2:

Next is parameter 99.04 for the control mode of the motor, i will keep this set as the default of  DTC for direct torque control.

Step 3:

Next parameter is 99.06 for motor nominal current i will need to set this to the value found on my motors namplate which is 0.9 amps after i save this.

Step 4:

Next parameter is 99.07 for motor nominal voltage i will change this to 230 volts as indicated on my namplate

Step 5:

The next setting is 99.08 for motor nominal frequency this should be set to sixty Hertz for North American motors.

Step 6:

Parameter 99.09 is for the motor nominal speed this is indicated as rpm on the namplate i will change this to 1725 rpm.

Step 7:

My last setting in the nine group parameter is 99.10 for nominal power of the motor this is indicated by kilowatts ir horsepower on the namplate right now this is set to horsepower.

it is possible to change the unit in parameter ninety six sixteen for unit selection or i can multiply the horsepower five point seven four six to get the equivalent value in kilowatts. I will plug in point thirteen horsepower and press save.

Before i start the motor i would like to change my acceleration and deceleration time this can be found in parameter group 23 i can press the left soft key to go back to the parameter groups and then scroll to this group i can press the select key and scroll to parameter 23 12 for accelaration time.

here i will change the value from 20 seconds to 2 seconds i will then press save and go to parameter 23 13 for decelaration time here i will change th value from 20 seconds to 5 seconds and press save.

I will push the left soft key a couple of times to get back to the home menu here, i can adjust the speed reference by pressing the up and down key.

I can see the speed reference change in the upper right corner of the panel. I could also press the left soft key to see the options and select reference to modify the speed reference.

I will go back the home view and press the start key and see the motor go up to the start reference i can change the speed anytime during operation from the home screen or the reference option

Step 8:

At parameter 99.13 normal ID run takes about 90 seconds to complete and then the drive is tuned to the exact motor.

Congratulations You have successfully set up the ABB ACS880 Variable Frequency Drive.
